U.S. Immigration Judge Clarease Yates and her husband, Cary, an executive with Wells Fargo Bank, are not just successful in their respective professions; they are also selfless givers in their community.


Judge Yates established the Let the Fashions Begin nonprofit organization that hosts the annual “Men of Style” event, benefiting the Texas Children’s Sickle Cell Center. The Yateses have been honored many times for their community service and philanthropic efforts. The couple shared with rolling out why their relationship has stood the test of time.

How do you keep your relationship fresh and exciting?
Dining out — good food, great music and taking turns selecting the venue.


Are there rules that you follow?
Put God first, family second, work third and end each day with your favorite late-night snack and beverage.

Where do you go to get away?
Belize, [in] Central America.

What should people know about marriage?
Marriage is many oxymorons. It is fun, but it is hard work. It is not always 50-50. Sometimes, it is 70-30. While we think our mates are perfect, we need to remember we are all just human.

Why is your relationship successful?
We try to learn from past mistakes and, each day, reinforce that your spouse is the most important person in your life. Don’t take yourselves too seriously. Have fun.
