How Music Changed Her Life:

“I was doing poetry in Philly and making $15  for each performance. During one performance,  I decided to sing. I don’t know why I sung, but it happened, and the audience loved it. After that, I started calling production companies, but no one would answer my phone calls for six months. I called Jazzy Jeff a lot, but he never answered. But I saw Jazzy Jeff on the street with DJ Rich Medina one day. Medina introduced me to Jeff. He later gave me a few tracks to sing over.  The songs turned out to be ‘This is the Way’ and ‘Long Walk.’ ”

Visiting the White House:

“Walking into the White House was amazing. It’s so clean and pristine. It really felt warm. I walked in, and they were playing Mos Def. I did the poem ‘Womanifesto.’ Women are being compartmentalized by physical attributes. It’s about loving the whole me. It’s also about gaining confidence to love your self. When you accept yourself, others will as well.”

Dating:

“For me, I’m looking for a partnership. You may not make more money than me, but can you clean the pool out [laughs]? Or if you can’t clean it, can you hire someone to do it? After coming home from a show, it would be nice for you to run a bath, play some music and to strip the world off. Some loving would be great also. It’s important to be a partner.”
