Business to Know: Keey 2 Kids

President and CEO: Wykesha Hayes

What inspired you to create your business? The vision for my business actually [came] to me as a sophomore at the University of Houston, during an internship turned job at a local community center here in the Houston area.  I fell in love with the community atmosphere that supported not only youth, but their families. As a frustrated certified educator, I felt too contained by the politics of educating youth and I felt limited in the impact that I wanted to make not only in the lives of youth, but the community. So, in May of 2005 I left the public school sector to begin orchestrating the 7-year-old vision of Keey 2 Kids.

What is the Keey 2 Kids mission? Our mission is simple, we are dedicated to “Kreating Educationally Enriched Youth” and giving communities the “Keey” to Success. As a multi-service educational firm, we offer a myriad of services to reinforce the academic and social development of youth, including professional development trainings for educators and parents.

What advice can you give others who are interested in entering your profession? To be a great teacher, a great leader, you must first become a great student.  Become a steward of your craft by consistently engaging in education trainings.  It is also important to remember that the art of education requires a unique understanding of the sociological and psychological development of humans, particularly youth. From a business perspective, partnerships and customer relationships are equally important — if not more important than credentials.  It is truly imperative that you spend a substantial amount of time building relationships and formidable partnerships.  This business is a business of trust, because our country’s most valuable citizens, youth, are the most important stakeholders.

What up-coming projects are you working on that our readers should know about? As president, I am looking forward to speaking at the Centennial Girls Scouts of America national convention in November. This is beyond huge, considering I’ll be alongside the likes of award-winning actress Marlee Matlin. … You can also catch me at the fourth annual Blacke Student Summit in November as the conference opening keynote speaker.  Plus,  our first Community Multi-disciplinary Education Gala and Conference will be [held] this spring. This is the opportunity to bring all major stakeholders into one place to train, discuss and strategize on how to improve education for all youth, especially urban youth of color. This fall, you can expect to see a second edition of the infamous Power Up Institute that took Houston by storm this summer.  This is an absolute must-attend for incoming teens [middle and high school].  Our year-round services include customized educational programs for youth including diagnostic assessments, and enrichment programs.  Parents and interested organizations should simply contact our office for initial consultations.
