A King Celebration with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (1280 Peachtree St. NE)


Thursday, Jan. 14, 8 p.m.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of the Atlanta Symphony’s tribute concerts to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma takes the stage.  Performed annually at Dr. King’s alma mater, Morehouse College, this momentous event takes place for the first time at Atlanta Symphony Hall, with Robert Spano conducting. Tickets range from $55 to $125.

Saturday, Jan. 14, Noon to 5 p.m.

Teen Media Mogul workshop is a comprehensive and engaging program for 12- to 17-year-olds. Attendees will experience creative development with the six most influential media outlets: music, television, film, radio, print and online media. Activities include interactive panels, hands-on media projects, executive guests, field trips and curriculum led by major media moguls. CONVERSATION & POETRY READING at Emory University (201 Dowman Dr.)

Sunday, Jan. 15, 3 p.m.

A King holiday conversation and performance featuring poet Eugene B. Redmond as he celebrates the 25th anniversary of Drumvoices Review. Sponsored by Manuscript, Archives and Rare Books Library (MARBL) Jones Room, Robert Woodruff Library. Reception to follow.

Atlanta MLK Events 2012Historic District Development Corporation: Herndon Plaza (142 Auburn Ave. NE)

Monday, Jan. 16

During the Martin Luther King Jr. Service Summit, volunteers will clean debris from the original Atlanta Life Insurance Company building at Herndon Plaza and do general landscaping and clean-up work around the grounds of the building. This project site is located in the King District and is not wheelchair accessible. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Please note: Herndon Plaza does not have electricity or heat (generators will be provided to provide light), so please dress warmly.

Monday, Jan. 16

Volunteers will paint murals, do general outdoor landscaping, and add container gardens. This project site is located in East Atlanta and is not wheelchair accessible. Volunteers must be at least 11 years old with adult supervision.

Atlanta MLK Events 2012Hands On Atlanta Family Service Project: Sandwiches for the Open Door Community (600 Means St NW #100)

Monday, Jan. 16, 10 a.m. to noon

Families will be making 2,000 sandwiches for the Open Door Community. This project site is near Georgia Tech and is wheelchair accessible. This project is geared toward families with children between 5 and 11 years old. However, families may bring older and younger children to the project as well.

Monday, Jan. 16, 10 a.m.

The Annual Commemorative Service will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Horizon Sanctuary. Take some time to visit the rest of the historical site after the service.

In commemoration of the National Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, Miller Lite and The Gidewon Foundation proudly present the “Goodness to Greatness” Hall of Fame private, invitation only reception recognizing those that have successfully taken the leap. Miller Lite and The Gidewon Foundation will recognize businesses, organizations and individuals in the City of Atlanta that take strides in enhancing the African American space by inducting them into the Miller Lite “Goodness to Greatness” Hall of Fame.

Sponsored by the African American Studies Department, Laney Graduate School, Office of Community and Diversity, Division of Campus Life and the Martin Luther King Holiday Observance Committee.  Reception and book signing in Brooks Commons.

Emory students, faculty and staff will read from speeches and letters written by prominent civil rights leaders from around the world, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mohandas Gandhi, Cesar Chavez and Aung San Suu Kyi. Sponsored by the Emory University Office of Residence Life.
