Facebook Buys AOL Patents, Partners With Microsoft

2012 is definitely Facebook‘s year. After purchasing the popular Instagram application, Mark Zuckerberg has continued to add to Facebook’s portfolio.

Today it was announced that Facebook is buying 650 of the 925 AOL patents and patent applications Microsoft bought from AOL for $1 billion.

As part of this $550 million deal, Facebook will also get a license to use the rest of the AOL Inc. patents. To avoid legal conflict, Microsoft Corp. will get a license to use the patents Facebook is buying.

Microsoft says the deal enables it to recoup half the cost of the AOL purchase.

What do you think? Is Zuckerberg making savvy business moves or is in he way over his head?
