Terrence Davidson is a licensed hair professional whose passion and drive afford him access to the celebrity inner circle and relatively intimate knowledge of stars like Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Patti LaBelle and the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. Davidson is a wig aficionado who specializes in the type of custom creations that grabbed the attention of a bubbly Queens, N.Y., rapper with video vixen looks and a rapid rhyme flow. That woman was Nicki Minaj, the international rap phenom who’s been fixated on his wigs since she shook up the rap game. “My passion to create gave me the chance to work with some of the industry’s greatest,” says Davidson.” “Believe it or not, Nicki was a referral from a friend of mine two years ago and we’ve been making history ever since.”
Minaj has become the most popular female in rap history, all while donning Davidson’s colorful coifs. For a recent Paper Magazine cover, Minaj wore a forest green wig with chartreuse highlights. Later, she appeared on the cover of Allure magazine in messy citrus orange curls before switching into a pink Victorian style wig wrapped up in a bow.
To call his wigs unique would be an understatement but there’s one hairpiece that holds a special place in his heart. “Each wig has a special place for me because it brings me back to a fun time,” says Davidson. “If I had to single one out, I would have to go with the zebra print Mohawk from the “Fly” video. I was just trying something new, and she loved it.”
If you’re not a celebrity with dollars to dish out for one of Davidson’s one-of-a-kind ‘dos, all hope is not lost. The hair pro encourages women to delve into the world of wigs at their local beauty supply store and own the room just like members of his celebrity clientele. “Go for it!!” says Davidson. “Just imagine your wildest style that you always wanted in whatever color and then get it, get dressed and go out. You would be surprised how you take over the room because you have decided to come out of your shell.”
