Floyd Mayweather Begins 3-Month Jail Sentence Today

Floyd Mayweather will be absent from the boxing world for much of the summer. The best pound-for-pound boxer in the world will begin an 87-day jail sentence today at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.

In December of 2011, Mayweather was convicted on domestic battery chargers after getting into a dispute with the mother of his children.

Mayweather faced 34 years in prison, but the judge later reduced the charges.

At the age of 35, Mayweather likely only has a few years remaining in his prime. The 87-day layoff from training will cause a set back in his career and a potential fight with Manny Pacquaio. The top two fighters in boxing have dodged each other for the past three years and Mayweather’s jail sentence won’t help matters.

If Mayweather is released in September, he would need at least three months to train for a tune-up fight. As a result, the public won’t get to see a Mayweather vs. Pacquaio fight until the spring or summer of 2013. –amir shaw
