Funk Flex Drops Bombs on Nicki Minaj

Just a day after Nicki Minaj pulled out of a so-called “historic” performance, the rapper was confronted on live radio by a popular show host. Funkmaster Flex ripped into Nicki Minaj on June 4 on Hot 97 for her brash decision to cancel her appearance at the station’s annual Summer Jam concert. As previously reported, Minaj was set to be the headliner with surprise appearances from her Young Money family, Foxy Brown, and Nas who would later bring out Lauryn Hill. She abruptly pulled out of the show, however, after becoming offended by a comment made by Hot 97’s Peter Rosenburg who suggested that her song “Starships” wasn’t real hip-hop. To add fuel to the already burning fire, an enraged Funkmaster Flex told the crowd at the concert, “We don’t f—- with commercial artists no more. We don’t give a s— if you commercial or pop and you afraid to touch down in Jersey.” He later added that he would “ruin her career.”

Obviously still unhappy about his comments and Peter Rosenburg’s, Minaj called into Funk Flex’s radio show to address the issue. “This is being broadcast to the world,” Nicki said of Sunday’s Summer Jam. “Flex, its not about his [Rosenburg’s] opinion, because I have opinions about DJs at Hot 97. I wouldn’t dare come on your stage with that. Everybody is grown enough to keep their opinions to their self.” “When you disrespect Nicki Minaj, your’e disrespecting my fans,” she added. “Don’t make those three million people feel that they’re inferior for their personal taste in music.”

At several points in the interview, the conversation between the pair seemed to heat up; “I need you to simmer,” Minaj said to the host who started raising his voice while asking her questions. At one point the “Starships” singer suggested that she shouldn’t have been singled out because she was the only woman on the bill. Following that she confirmed that Lil Wayne made the decision to pull her out of the program. “ But did Wayne do the right thing?!” asked Flex. “Listen Flex, I need you to calm down,” she responded. After a brief back and forth between the two over the question Minaj finally answered saying, “Capital Y, capital E, capital S. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.”

Minaj has since promised to do a free concert over the summer for her fans.

Was Minaj right to listen to Lil Wayne and pull out of Summer Jam? Or should she have practiced professionalism and performed for her fans? Listen to her interview below. –danielle canada
