Republican Mitt Romney raised millions on Obama’s turf last night and it was a Chicago showdown indeed.

Mitt Romney blew through President Obama’s backyard, dissed him, and raised $3.3 million in the process.

“… The American people, whether they like him or don’t like him, recognize he’s [in] over his head, and it’s time to put into the White House somebody who knows how to get this economy going, and I do and I will,” Romney told 200 supporters who paid big money to feast on chicken, pizza, mini-burgers and shrimp wrapped in pork bacon.

The reception cost $2,500; a photo, $10,000 and $50,000 for a private dinner.

“He’s going to be saying today that he wants for four more years,” said Romney. “He may have forgotten he talked about a one-term proposition if he couldn’t get the economy turned around in three years, but we’re going to hold him to his word.”

Romney said that Obama will drive the U.S. economy into uncertainty, and will stunt business growth.

“I just don’t think the president understands how America works, how the economy works.”

Romney also warned that if Obama earns a second term, the United States will have the same financial crisis that Europe now faces: “We’re going to have the chronic high unemployment Europe has, the low-wage growth Europe has.”

Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, spoke at the chic Pump Room on Chicago’s Gold Coast. He has a support base in Chicago, as he beat his Republican opponents back in March for the Illinois primary.

Romney wasn’t too much of a badass, however; he left the 312 (that’s the Gold Coast area code) before Obama was due to land on Friday.

Ironically, what Romney did not mention was that he was on President Obama’s turf; he kept his jabs above the waistline.

“I don’t think he’s a person who’s not a nice guy,” he said, “I just don’t think his policies are able to get this country on track again.”
