Rasheeda: Keeping It Real

Rasheeda: Keeping It Real

As quiet as it’s kept, Rasheeda is about as real as it gets. From total strangers to lifelong family and friends, there is one constant that is sure to be experienced by any and all who are fortunate enough to encounter the Atlanta rapper and entrepreneur …
You can expect to get “the real.”

So what does that entail, exactly? Well, it’s not what reality television’s portrayal of black women would have you believe. In those instances, women who “keep it real” are typically viewed as the super sassy types who will curse you out or threaten physical violence at the drop of a hat.

But that’s not what Rasheeda represents. By keeping it real, Rasheeda has managed to carve out a decadelong career in the music industry that has remained devoid of drama, scandal, or a stark change in her personality.
Again, she keeps it real.

That real will now be front and center on VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” where the world will get a front row seat as Rasheeda attempts to juggle music, marriage and entrepreneurship. Rolling out sat down with the talented beauty to discuss the show, and to get her take on this important next phase of her career.

We are excited about seeing you on “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta.” What can viewers expect to learn about you from the show?
What you’re going to learn about me on “Love & Hip Hop” is that I am very serious about what I do. I’m serious about my family and my relationships … you know. I’m just a woman that’s going hard for what I believe in. I understand that you have to create balance in your life. And I have been on the scene for a while, so being both old school and new school, I know that I have so much to learn and accomplish, but I also have the knowledge of what I’ve experienced over the years that will help me get there.

So let’s talk about some of the things that you’ve accomplished. Outside of rap, you have so many other business ventures. Can you tell us a little about that?
I do have my website, which is www.imbossy.com … It’s an apparel website that I launched about a year and a half ago. I’m really excited about it. It’s doing extremely well, and I’m always rocking my stuff. So if you want the trendy, fly and fashionable stuff, then you need to come to my website. I’m also doing television, of course, and working on the new album, Boss Chick Music that will be dropping really soon. I shot the video to the song “Marry Me.” I also shot the video for the song “Legs to the Moon” featuring Kandi [Burruss], so I just have a lot that I’m juggling right now. One thing that a lot of people might not know is that I get a lot of my songs placed on television, movies and video games. Those things are doing extremely well, so I just feel extremely blessed to be able to wake up every day and do what I love.

Touching on your relationship with Kandi, now that you both have such big audiences, do you think that the two of you will bring back your group, Peach Candy?

You know, our schedules are both so crazy that when we do talk on the phone we really struggle trying to figure out when we are going to see each other. But the good thing is that we will throw out little things here and there. For example, “Legs to the Moon,” isn’t an official Peach Candy song, but it’s something that we’re putting out there to satisfy the fans that really want us to continue in that.  Hopefully, we can get back together and do a Peach Candy album again, but with our schedules, we will just continue to do things together when we can.

With the show and new music in your life, there have also been reports that you are now a grandmother. Is there any truth to that?
Let me tell you this; all I have is an 11-year-old son, and that’s it. So he better not be shooting anything out that thang [laughs]. I will say this, though; if you stay tuned to “Love & Hip Hop,” you can see how all of that unfolded.

We viewed the first episode of the show. While some of the characters seem to be embroiled in drama, you remain pretty drama free. Was that intentional?

Well the cameras followed me, so what you see is what you get. And to be honest with you, I really don’t have time to be bickering with no b—–. That’s just not where I’m at. I am too focused on making money, keeping the bills paid, and making sure that my family is ok. I mean don’t get me wrong, I understand that a lot of that it good for TV … but at the end of the day, I just really want people to look at my situation and see the importance of family, and know that you can raise a child as mom and dad … together. We don’t see a lot of family structure in the black community, so I hope that people can look at my husband and I, and see that when they follow our story line.

With both you and your husband in the entertainment industry, is that something that you think that your son will want to pursue?

Right now, he is in this phase where what he wants to do [something different] every two weeks. But all that I want to do is just support him in whatever he decides to take seriously. To me, that’s what’s important. I just want to communicate, talk to him, and be there for him in whatever it is that he needs. At the end of the day, I just want him to be happy and be a great person.
