Frank Ocean Releases Debut Album a Week Early

Just a week after announcing to the world that his first love was a man, Frank Ocean has released his debut album. The Odd Future crooner whose bisexuality has been the subject of praise and criticism alike was featured on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” early Tuesday and he brought the house down with his first televised performance. Accompanied by a string section, he sang to the high heavens, often in falsetto about unrequited love, quite possibly the love he wrote about in that open letter. “It’s unrequited love, I could never make him love me, love me, love me,” sang the “Bad Religion” creator.

Prior to his performance, the Internet was on fire with news that Ocean’s highly anticipated Channel Orange album would be available a full week before its July 17 release date. And while the move raised a few eyebrows with many wondering if it was a contrived ploy by Def Jam to drum up sales, overall it was widely accepted. “It makes you wonder if the decision to do so was prompted by Frank’s courageous stand and/or the potential effect that the current media attention might have on sales?” asked radio host Miss Info about the subject. “In the past, the only reason to suddenly move a date up has been to counteract an album leak on the web, but channel Orange hasn’t been pirated. Does this move bother you as opportunistic? Another way to look at it, the album is a product for sale, so doesn’t it makes sense to follow the normal rules of supply for demand?”

Even before Ocean made headlines with news of his sexuality, Channel Orange remained one of the most highly anticipated albums this year. With waves of celebrity supporters, including “The Throne” and Beyoncé who admitted a track he penned for her brought her to tears, interest around his project reached a fever pitch. With last night’s release, that fever pitch has skyrocketed the 24-year-old to the top of iTunes’ chart.

Ocean’s project isn’t the only new release however, a “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” cast member dropped a mixtape Monday, as well as a former Young Money emcee. Check out a few more music releases this week.
