Mattel Introduces First-Ever Drag Queen Doll

Did a famed toy maker go too far when they decided to introduce a LGBT friendly doll into their collection? That’s a question to ask yourself after taking a look at the newest Barbie in Mattel’s lineup. The world’s largest and arguably most popular toy company recently released their Dazzling Diamond Barbie based off designer Phillipe Blond of The Blonds. Blond is known to dress in drag and wear blonde wigs and sparkly dresses during his fashion shows alongside fellow designer David Blond.  So far the doll’s release has not caused a widespread uproar, but as expected has raised quite a few eyebrows online.

“You know we are in trouble morally when Barbie starts cross- dressing. Shame on Mattel,” wrote one commenter on the Web. “I am at a loss for words,” chimed in another.

Cathy Cline, vice president of marketing for Mattel’s girls’ brands, told The New York Times this week that the move to make a “drag queen doll” was inspired by Barbie herself. “One of the great things about Barbie is that she continues to push the envelope,” said Cline. “Barbie doesn’t worry about what other people think.”

The inspiration for the doll, Phillipe Blond, shared similar sentiments. “Fashion is a form of self-expression and we believe that everyone should feel glamorous every day,” he said.

While the Barbie is considered a “drag queen,” the doll does not have carefully hidden male parts nor an Adam’s apple.
