Recreational Marijuana Use Approved In Colorado

Marijuana aficionados are rejoicing today after a controversial amendment legalizing the recreational use of marijuana passed Tuesday. During the 2012 election Colorodans approved amendment 64–‘the regulate marijuana like alcohol act’ that calls for the state to allow the recreational use of the drug. Under the amendment, people 21 and older can purchase up to one ounce of weed at specially regulated retail stores. Possession would be legal but not public use limiting people to smoke the product in the comfort of their homes. Additionally, adults could grow up to six marijuana plants in their homes. Amendment 64 passed with 53.3 percent voting yes and 46.7 percent voting no, with 1,863,535 votes counted. The measure also passed in Washington State.


And while a number of people are rejoicing, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper didn’t seem all too pleased with its passing. “The voters have spoken and we have to respect their will,” said the Governor in a statement. “This will be a complicated process, but we intend to follow through. That said, federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug so don’t break out the Cheetos or gold fish too quickly.”


The Governor is correct with his words about about federal drug laws. According to federal regulation marijuana is still an illegal substance and Amendment 64 violates that order.
