Wendy Williams says she could have ended up like Whitney Houston

The relationship between Wendy Williams and Whitney Houston was tumultuous, to say the least. The two women had been involved in an uncomfortably bitter feud for years as Williams, one of the nation’s biggest shock jock radio and talk show hosts, continuously targeted Houston’s chaotic personal life. But, one thing that the two women had in common was their addiction to drugs, which, sadly, led to Houston’s shocking death earlier this year. Few other celebs seemed to be as affected by Houston’s death as Williams and she recently opened up about her fear of following the same deadly path as the late singer.

Williams’ cocaine use began in her 20s and she struggled for the next 10 years with her life-threatening addiction before finally getting clean and saving her life. But, Williams recently claimed that the similarities between her and Houston’s struggles with drugs are undeniable.

“That could have been me if I hadn’t sobered up,” Williams said. “Whitney and I are [about] the same age, we both come from New Jersey and from parents who love us; we both struggled to have a child. We never met, but we have an incredible amount in common. I thought at some point we would meet in a room and just hug. But we lost her.”

In a new interview wtith InTouch Weekly, Williams opened up about her past drug use and her journey to get clean.

“I was a functioning addict. I’d work from 3 in the afternoon until 7 at night, get off and party until 7 in the morning — then sleep until 2, go to the radio station and do it all over again,” Williams said.

The talk show host explained that her decision to get clean came when she began falling in love with the man she would eventually marry, Kevin Hunter.

“The habit was not breaking me, so I could’ve gone on and on, except I was falling in love with this guy,” Williams said. “I learned to just wean, wean, wean, and then finally stop. I didn’t even have to go to rehab. I’m not bragging; it’s just fact. I was never in the streets looking for a fix.”

Thankfully, Williams isn’t the only celeb to kick a drug addiction. Check out some other sober celebs below. – nicholas robinson
