Do acrylic nails damage natural nails?

acrylic nails

Many people believe that acrylic nails damage real nails. This is a common misconception that has entered the minds of many, preventing them from having a flawless manicure that lasts longer and looks beautiful. But before we decide whether or not acrylic nails are harmful, let’s understand what they are.

Acrylic Nails

Also known as nail extensions or fake nails, acrylic nails are artificial nails that are placed on top of the real nails. They are made from different materials that include plastic, polymer, silk warps or fiberglass. They are available in many colors or nude blends that match the real nail.

People who are unable to grow their nails find this beneficial. Another advantage of acrylic nails is that they prevent the real nail from chipping or breaking and calm nail-biting habits.

Concerns about Acrylic Nails

Research shows that there is very little evidence of any damage to the real nails because of acrylic nail application. What does damage the nail is the improper application or removal of acrylic nails. If you want to get nail extensions, be sure to keep the following in mind:

  • Always go to a licensed salon with licensed nail technicians who are experienced. If you get your nails done by someone who does not know what he/she is doing, you may develop an infection.
  • Be sure to check instruments. If the instruments are outdated and/or dirty, leftover bacteria or fungi may enter your bloodstream and lead to infection, discoloration and nail thickening.
  • Don’t let the nail expert roughen or file the surface of your nail. She/he might insist that it’s an important procedure, but it’s not.
  • Seek professional help when removing artificial nails. This reduces the chance of you weakening or damaged your real nails.
