What do you love the most about what you do?

[There are] really two things I love the most, the first is the art of bringing an idea or a vision to life and the other is having a very satisfied client.

How do you go about your creative process before directing a video?

The first thing I do is get familiar with the music. I may listen to a track 100 times before I get a vision.

I research the artist, especially new artists, I look at their videos, as well as other content they may have on the Internet. I also listen to other music they may have, this helps in familiarizing myself with an artist’s vision or movement.

Then I apply the millions of images and visuals I have stored, all be it fiction or nonfiction. Some thoughts come from movies, commercials, books, magazine spreads, TV shows and some ideas come from everyday experiences.

What are you currently working on?

Of course, the videos never stop. [I’ve] got some summertime releases with Jeremih, Rocko, Raekwon, Estelle, Bobby V, Lloyd, Verse Simmonds, Jeezy, along with some very talented new and up-and-coming artists. I also got my hands in the pot on the production of a couple reality shows being shot and produced here in Atlanta. Lastly, I’m finishing up a script I been working on for awhile. Yep, it’s about time to make that film move [laughs].

You direct TV shows and video — which do you like best?

Yes, I do a little bit of both, I actually come from the TV world. I really do like the videos more, that’s where my passion lies. I love the creative freedom to express myself in that format.

What advice would you give to an up-and-coming director?

Don’t only learn the camera and the lights. Learn the ins and outs of what a director is responsible for. Don’t be blind to accountability and the pressures that come with being the man. Find a creative process that works for you. Learn the art of dealing with people — that is very important. Do good business and show respect.
