Last Saturday, July 6, Robert Vann Marshall of Athens, Tenn., was arrested for threatening to kill his wife and children. After Marshall was arrested, police found out that there was a standing restraining order against him that his wife, Melissa Marshall, had filed previously.

Before his release from prison, police officials reminded Marshall of his restraining order and even printed a copy for him to take with him. However, he did not take heed to the warnings and went straight to his family’s home.  As Melissa was calling for help, her husband allegedly kicked the door in and came after her, which led to her shooting and killing him. When police finally arrived, they found Robert Marshall’s dead body in the bedroom of the home.

Athens police also recommended a mental evaluation due to Robert appearing to be “suicidal and homicidal” during and after his arrest but he was allowed to make his $1,500 bail and leave before the evaluation took place.

No charges have been filed against Melissa Marshall due to police believing that she acted in self-defense.
