Wendy Williams responds to controversy over transphobic comments

Wendy Williams landed herself in hot water with the LGBT community last week when she held a panel discussion about transgender athletes Chloie Jonsson and claimed that CrossFit was justified in banning Jonsson from competing in its events because she was born a man. Since then, there’s been an outpouring of criticism over Williams’ words, but she recently sent out a public apology to fans for the panel.

During the panel discussion, which included Judge Lynn Toler of “Divorce Court” and Joe Pardavila of “The Todd Show,” Williams discussed Jonsson’s $2.5 million lawsuit against CrossFit, who claimed that Jonsson had an unfair physical advantage over biological women, and Williams sided with the fitness company.

“This is an unfair advantage … you can take away female parts or male parts or whatever — it’s like Chaz Bono! You know Chaz is a man now, but I bet she [sic] still fights like a girl like the rest of us and she’s [sic] not as strong as a man who was born a man,” said Williams.

However, after enduring the first wave of her backlash, Williams sent out a couple of tweets to apologize for her comments and she vowed to learn more about the transgender community and experience.

We commend Williams for apologizing and we hope that her claims to learn more about transgender life isn’t just an empty promise to get the critics off her back, especially considering how much of her swagger and lingo comes from that same community.
