How did you arrive at this career choice? Was it a deliberate decision or a gradual and natural evolution?
The career choice to write has always been an active goal. I went to undergrad for creative writing with the intent to pursue the art of storytelling.

What separates you from others in your field? What is unique to the experience that you create?
The story that I tell through Autumn’s Child is distinct to a fictionalized experience of Layla, the main character, but universally appealing in the emotions that she feels throughout the novel. I craft fiction from real emotions.

autumn's childFor those considering entering this arena, what skill sets do you recommend mastering? What traits are most conducive to success?
I recommend the art of sitting down and just writing; tapping into the story by how you feel about the characters and their journey.

How do you map out your goals? How do you measure your success?
I map out my goals with deadlines for completion of a project and the dedicated time to create.

Name two of your top role models: one from your industry and one from outside of it.
Shonda Rhimes; I love the way her mind works; how she connects and weaving in the story lines in “Scandal.” Janette Fitch is the author of White Oleander, which was the first story that immediately inspired me to write.

Name three books, works, performances or exhibits that changed how you view life and/or yourself.
The Prophet by Khalil Gibran, Joy by Osho and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

What affirmations do you repeat to yourself that contribute to your success?
Happiness is a choice, not a destination.

What role does technology play in your day-to-day life? How do you utilize it?
The mobility of writing and researching on your phone. There are times when an idea hits you or a story line comes together and you have to get it out of you as it comes to mind. Creativity and ideas are gifts from the unknown that shouldn’t go forgotten or overlooked; it enters into your realm of consciousness for a reason that should be captured. My cell phone is the first thing I pick up so that I don’t lose that thought or idea.

Please define your personal brand.
My personal brand is a symbol of creativity, inspiration, and realism; taking stories, ideas, that are felt by others, not just heard or seen.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?
Egypt, learning the culture and history was a life changing experience.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
Love; that we all held genuine love for ourselves and mankind at a higher standard which in turn would give us the ability to live up to our best selves and help our brothers and sisters to do the same.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Focus; I would spend more time focused and dedicated to my craft and aligning my life in a matter that holistically moves towards my purpose without any excuses or compromise.

What does it take to be iconic? In your estimation, who has achieved that status?
To be iconic is to diligently dedicate your purpose on the earth to a craft, trait or idea that goes beyond your selfish wants. It is to speak to the broader reflection of humanity.
