Sky Heavens discusses new music, channeling Rihanna and life on the road with Eminem

SKY4X4_FRONT-4

On an average night, Sky Heavens must channel the likes of Rihanna, Dido and Pink while singing in front of thousands. As the backing singer for Eminem during his world tour, Heavens helps to bring melody to the rapper’s engaging lyricism and aggressive sound.

Heavens is now giving listeners her story with her latest EP, Luz. While on Eminem’s current world tour, Heavens took a moment to discuss her new project and life on the road with a rap legend.

What was the inspiration behind the new single “Hear Me Cry”?

Some people think the song “Hear Me Cry” is about masturbation. But it’s actually about finding your inner light and learning how to love yourself. It’s a certain kind of inner beauty you experience once you completely understand, accept and love yourself. It becomes easier to communicate that self-worth to others and to let them know how you want and should be loved.

Why was it important for you to dedicate the EP Luz to your mother?

My mother meant the world to me, and losing her was one of the most painful experiences I have ever felt in my life. Her name, Luz, also means light in Spanish so it just made sense for me. Overall, it describes what I’ve been in search of, finding my inner light. I’ve been depressed for a long time and losing my mother just put me in a darker place. It took some time, but thankfully I found peace, my inner light. My inner Luz lives within me. So overall, my mother’s name fits perfectly on all levels.

What have you learned most about touring worldwide with Eminem?

No man or woman is an island. It takes a team to build an empire. And he has a great team which then allows him the space to really tap into his creative genius.

When you cover songs that feature Rihanna, Pink, and Dido, how do you channel each artist so that the song remains authentic?

It’s like playing a role. I submerge myself into the essence of that song. I truly listen to the words, try to capture the spirit of what the song is about and place myself in that moment.

You also have a foundation. Why is it important for you to give back?

Yes, it’s called S.H.E (Sky Heavens Empowerment) [and] it’s focused on bringing awareness to domestic violence, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, & mental illness. I feel that helping and sharing my story is a part of my calling and purpose. I’ve always been a selfless person, which is one of the beautiful things I inherited from my mother. So when I’m able to inspire, motivate, or help others, the level of the fulfillment that I receive in return is priceless.
