The Chicago Football Classic ushers in the fall season in the city. This time of year, students and alumni from all over the country from HCBUs and other universities gather in Soldier Field for a celebration. Classmates new and old reunite for a weekend of reminiscing and making new memories. It has become a staple in the Black community and serves as a good reason to tailgate and dust off those old step routines and greek paraphernalia from back in the day. Thousands come to witness the spectacle of the band. The halftime show is the highlight of the event each year. The bands rule, and don’t let anyone tell you different. Halftime is not the time to go get refreshments. You have to stick around for the battle of the bands. This year, Morgan State and Howard University went at it.

After the smoke settled, Howard took the crown as winner of the band battle. A college fair and a high school battle of the bands was held before the classic and crowds of young people who may have not been exposed to many of the advantages of college life were surrounded by great examples. Oh, yeah, there was a football game. Morgan State won that game 21 to 13.
