The rap game can be violent for some aspiring artists who must deal with the reality of street life and business life. There are many behind-the-scenes tales of bad music deals that can turn violent, as can be seen on the hit TV show “Empire.” But when aspiring rapper Ryan Anthony Salandy, 22, was arrested for murder it surprised many in Germantown, Maryland. This is because Salandy is known as a Christian rap artist, who is now accused of killing a man over some beats.

Salandy was in court this week facing charges of first-degree murder for the death of William McDaniel, 21. According to Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Stanks, “Investigators believe there was some relationship where Mr. McDaniel was formatting or doing something with music given to him by Mr. Salandy.” Police claim that Salandy admitted driving away from McDaniel’s home, turning around, accelerating and striking McDaniel while he was walking his dog. Police claim multiple witnesses saw the event and were able to indentify Salandy’s 2006 SAAB. Salandy fled the scene and went to his mother’s house. His mother called police an hour later and informed authorities that her son was involved in a hit and run accident.

When police arrived at the house, they found a blood splattered, heavily damaged car and received a confession from Salandy that he struck McDaniel on purpose. However, his lawyer is disputing the validity of the confession. The courtroom was packed with family and community supporters of Salandy and McDaniel. Salandy was described by family and friends as “A great kid … Always kind, always respectful, peaceful.” As his name and charges were read in court, Salandy bowed his head sobbing heavily.  He is being held without bond facing possible life imprisonment.
