Fox 2000 is serving up a second helping of Soul Food. The studio is currently working on More Soul Food, a sequel based on the 1997 cult classic, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Returning as director is George Tillman Jr., who wrote and directed the original. He’ll be writing the new script along with Nathan Skulnik. While Tillman’s State Street Pictures will produce the feature with Tracey and Babyface Edmonds.

The original film, starring Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long, Michael Beach and Mekhi Phifer, followed a close-knit Black family whose tradition of eating a big dinner together every Sunday was torn apart after the death of the one person who kept their family together — their matriarch.

The film, which was released in 1997, earned $43.7 million before being turned into a Showtime TV series, “Soul Food: The Series,” which aired from 2000 through 2004.

According to THR, “the sequel will chronicle the new, millennial generation of the Joseph family. In the age of cellphones and social media, the once-close clan finds themselves disconnected and, without the guidance of the elders who have always held things together, they struggle to rediscover the importance of tradition and family.”

Although there is no word on whether or not any of the original cast will be signing on to return in the follow-up film, it sounds like it could be a hit. Will you be watching? Sound off in the comment section below.
