After years of enduring a tumultuous relationship with Chris Brown, Karrueche Tran finally ended her relationship with the troubled pop singer earlier this year after she and the rest of the world discovered that he’d secretly fathered a one-year-old daughter with another woman, Nia Guzman. Although Tran has tried over the last several months to distance herself from Brown, fans still can’t seem to detach her from her ex and in a recent interview she explained how it’s hurting her career.

In an new interview with the BBC, Tran explained that it’s been difficult to book acting jobs in Hollywood because people won’t stop associating her with Brown.

“A lot of people think I am a weak individual because of past situations, and when it comes to business, sometimes people don’t want to be involved with somebody like that. Which is understandable, but it sucks, because I’m not a weak person,” Tran said.

According to Tran, she’s ready to be recognized as her own woman without Brown.

“I used to date him, and now, as I am growing into myself and maturing and getting my career together, I am starting to have my own name,” Tran explained.

However, she does understand the tough road ahead of her to establish a name without her famous ex.

“I feel like I shouldn’t have to explain myself to anybody because this is my life and I can do whatever I want. But in the same breath, it’s like, now that I am trying to focus on my career and get my stuff together, I have to clear up certain things,” Tran said.

Considering that Brown pulled Tran out of obscurity and into the limelight, it’s reasonable that fans still think of him when they see her, especially since they’ve known nothing of her resume outside of him. Although the task at hand will be difficult, Tran can follow in the footsteps of other Hollywood exes and make a name for herself on her own.
