As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor one of the most dominate figures in sports, Jesse Owens. In what was the greatest performance of any athlete of a single Olympics, Owens overcomes Adolf Hitler and rabid racism to win four medals and defeat Aryan Nazism at the 1936 Olympics in Germany. He became the first American track and field athlete to win four gold medals in a single Olympiad. Owens’ victories in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the long jump and the 400-meter relay are considered one of the greatest athletic feats of all time. During a time of deep-rooted segregation, he affirmed that individual excellence — rather than race or national origin — distinguishes an individual. The entire world took note of his remarkable achievement, one which remains without precedent. His record number of gold medal wins stood for 48 years.
