Congratulations are in order for hip-hop heavyweight, Kendrick Lamar. On Saturday, Feb. 13, the city of Compton honored the star with his very own key to the city.

The ceremony honoring the Grammy Award-winning artist and Compton native was held at the Martin Luther King Monument at Civic Center Plaza. “Kendrick Lamar is a phenomenal artist whose work has served as a catalyst to raise a new level of consciousness for this generation,” said Compton Mayor Aja Brown in a statement. “His message challenges the status quo and motivates listeners to rethink our society’s institutions.” She even went on to joke that Lamar’s key is “better than Drake’s key.”

Prior to the event, Brown gushed over the 28-year-old saying, “Kendrick Lamar is a phenomenal artist whose work has served as a catalyst to raise a new level of consciousness for this generation,” she told The Los Angeles Times.

Among the Compton citizens presented with the honor was YG. However, the event took a turn for the awkward when one of the speakers used the opportunity to diss Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug, calling their music “a bunch of mumbo jumbo.”

Fortunately, nothing could totally detract from Lamar’s day of honor. Just last year, Lamar wrote a love letter to his hometown by way of his music video “King Kunta,” where he and his friends danced through the busy streets of Compton alongside city landmarks like the Compton Swap Meet, also known as the Compton Fashion Center. The key to the city is simply Compton’s loving reply to Lamar’s tribute.

According to city officials, Lamar attended Centennial High School as a teenager, where he was a straight-A student. In 2015, he served as the 63rd grand marshal of the Compton Christmas Parade. “Kendrick Lamar is one of Compton’s greatest ambassadors,” said City Councilwoman Janna Zurita. “We in Compton are proud of him because he is a symbol of what our city really is — a place where dreams can come true.”
