Yesterday, tragedy struck the world when music legend and icon Prince died at the age of 57 from unknown causes. Immediately after the news of his death was confirmed, fans and stars across the globe began to pour out their hearts over the Web as they shared somber stories of their heartbreak and love for the Purple One. And while some of those heartbroken celebs recounted stories of their time with Prince, few knew him as well as legendary drummer and performer, Sheila E. And after finding out about Prince’s death, she shared a message with his fans about how to honor him.

Sheila was an aspiring artist and percussionist and got her big break in the industry when she met Prince at a concert in 1978 and he eventually invited her to join his band and sit in for the recording sessions of his landmark album, Purple Rain. And what started as a musical pairing eventually turned into a brief romance as Sheila launched her solo career, making hits like 1984’s “The Glamorous Life” and 1985’s “A Love Bizarre.”

Although Sheila eventually embarked on a solo career, she and Prince remained closed and held a deep respect for each other’s artistry.

So, it comes as no surprise that Sheila was devastated to discover that her former lover and longtime friend had been found dead in his Paisley Park studio in Minnesota.

According to media reports, Sheila recently spoke to the press while on her way to Prince’s family and she explained that she’s “not too good” after learning of his death. And when she was asked if she saw any signs that Prince’s health had declined, she explained that she had no idea his life was in danger.

“No,” she said, before later adding that she’s determined to discover the cause of Prince’s death, “you know, everyone gets sick once in a while. We don’t know. We’re going to find out.”

As previously reported, Prince suffered a medical emergency last Friday when he was rushed to the hospital in Moline, Illinois, after his private plane made an emergency landing. At the time, reports claimed that Prince had been battling the flu for weeks and that he was released from the hospital just a few hours after his arrival.

However, shortly after his death, reports began flying that Prince’s death may have been drug-related as sources claimed that he’d been treated for a drug overdose just days before his death. However, the drug allegations won’t be confirmed until the results of Prince’s autopsy have been revealed.

Sheila didn’t speak about the drug rumors, but she did share a message for fans when asked if she had anything to say to them.

“Just keep saying prayers for everyone, for the family,” Sheila said.

Our condolences go out to Sheila and Prince’s family.
