If you will be in the Detroit area this weekend and you still need something to do on Father’s Day, and the “dad” in your life likes jazz, then the Jazz Spectacular at Freedom Hill Amphitheater in Sterling Heights is where you need to be. Five hours of jazz kicks off at 5 p.m. on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19 and this star-studded event is sure to soothe the soul of any jazz lover. With such talented artists as Najee, Kenny Lattimore, Meli’sa Morgan, Alex Bugnon, Jonathan Butler, Gerald Albright and the incomparable Rachelle Ferrell, the most avid jazz lover’s appetite will most assuredly be satisfied.

Rachelle Ferrell perhaps has one of the most unique sounds in the lineup, with her six-octave range. She is a classically trained violinist, pianist and Berklee College of Music graduate. She gains some of her musical inspirations from Andres Segovia, Carlos Nakai and Johannes Brahms. She’s a former backup singer for Patti LaBelle and George Duke and is ecstatic to be coming back to the Motor City to perform for Father’s Day.

Farrell is no stranger to performing in the Detroit Metro area, and when asked about what to expect about the Father’s Day show, she had this to say:

“I’m looking forward to it [the concert], because it’s Father’s Day. And personally, I’ve never had an opportunity to celebrate the sacred masculine on their day here in our American society. I just have a whole lot to be grateful for, a whole new understanding of father’s and their roles and how they are constantly and consistently unsung in the media, in terms of the positive aspects in the way that they sustain us in so much of our world. I’m working on a song called “Happy Father’s Day”, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday with my folks and my Detroit family – and get more material, more energetic substance in which to complete  the writing of the song.”

The Jazz Spectacular will be a wonderful outing for Father’s Day. Be sure to catch it if you’re in the Detroit metro area. Tickets are still available, and range from $29.50 up to $79.50. Call 1.800.745.3000 for more details on the show.
