Florida International University (FIU) tight end Jonnu Smith had big dreams for going pro and his work on the field made him a top draft pick for the NFL. Smith is one of the top players at FIU and has impressive stats that include 17 career touchdown passes and 175 receptions. He was considered a best 2017 NFL Draft prospect, but now his career has come to an abrupt stop after an attack by his pregnant girlfriend.

Mary Gaspar, 20, is five months pregnant and was arguing with Smith on October 31 in his dorm room apartment. She was upset that Smith was not spending enough time with her during the pregnancy. According to statement’s Gaspar made to police, the couple had been arguing all day. She told police she was “feeling extremely emotional and stressed” so she decided to get Smith’s attention. She went into the kitchen and boiled a pot full of water and then poured it over Smith as he was sitting in a chair. When Smith did not react quickly she then began beating him with the pot.

Smith was hospitalized with severe burns on his head, neck, back, a shoulder and arm and has since been released. Gaspar was arrested two days after the attack on a charge of felony aggravated battery. At a court hearing, she entered a not guilty plea and has been released on a pretrial order. Smith has been seen back on campus but is no longer able to play football because of his injuries.
