Texas police and volunteers have called off their search for the 9-year-old nephew of former NBA star Marcus Camby, who disappeared on Thursday, November 24, from his relative’s home in Pearland, Texas.

According to authorities, the body of Marcus McGhee, an autistic child, was discovered at about 7 a.m. in a small lake behind Camby’s sprawling home. “SEARCH CALLED OFF: The Pearland Police Department regrets to inform the community that Marcus McGhee has been found. Today’s search will be called off. We thank all of you for your efforts. The family is now in need of our prayers. Additional details will be released later,” reads a brief message on the department’s Facebook page.

On Thanksgiving Day, the Pearland Police Department posted the initial “missing child alert,” revealing that the child who was visiting Camby’s home for the holiday, was last seen wearing a black T-shirt with a green Nike symbol along with gray and black sweat pants. He was not wearing shoes.

McGhee had been playing with other kids, but at about 4:15 p.m. adults noticed he was missing. They began searching the house, which has “lots of rooms, lots of places where people can hide,” Pearland Police Lt. Onesimo Lopez said. “Each room opens to a different room. It’s almost like a labyrinth.”

Police arrived on the scene at 4:45 p.m. when they began combing the property, which includes a small lake. According to reports, a security camera captured Marcus slipping out a side door, but just for a few seconds.

Within hours, off-duty officers, neighbors, friends and family had gathered in an effort to recover McGhee. “We appreciate all the prayers and help thus far. There are dozens of citizens out in cars helping search. Please do not bring ATV’s or horses to the search area. Marcus is autistic and we are concerned that loud noises or large animals may frighten the child. A bloodhound track pointed to the area of FM 1128 and FM 518. Citizens are asked to fan out in all directions from that point,” read an additional statement.

“We’ve been amazed by how many off-duty officers came out, they just want to help out,”said Lopez. “We’ve just been inundated with people. We’re covering a lot of territory so this helps.”

However, despite the community’s best efforts, Lopez sadly announced that as of today, Saturday, November 26, “The family is now in need of our prayers.” Our thoughts and prayers go out to Camby and the McGhee family. Share your condolences in the comment section below.
