Opening up for powerhouse acts early in his career such as Musiq Soulchild, Ne-Yo, Avery Sunshine and more, R&B-soul singer Jamison has quite the résumé. While currently promoting his critically acclaimed Acoustic Thoughts EP, we got a chance to speak with the singer about his journey and how he stays at the leading edge of his craft.

How did you arrive at this career choice?

It was sort of predestined and inevitable. Both of my parents were in the industry and most of my childhood memories consisted of airports and soundchecks.

Was it a deliberate decision or a gradual and natural evolution?

As far as being a singer-songwriter, that part was a natural evolution because my goal was to be just a drummer!

What separates you from others in your field?

The thing that I believe separates individuals is the ability to preserve integrity throughout growth, and considering that I’m from Motown [Detroit] there’s a certain level of soul that I must possess.

What is unique to the experience that you create?

The unique relevance to my music and my brand alike is again the consistency and integrity of a more opulent vision to push the culture with lost elements like love and chivalry.

For those considering entering this arena, what skill sets do you recommend mastering?

Honestly, discipline. Discipline is what will keep the humility needed to understand the countless hours required to master your craft, it will also earn you the respect of those that have the opportunity to share with you [guidance] to ensure your growth within the industry.

What traits are most conducive to success?

Humility, discipline, and a strong sense of self-confidence.

How do you stay at the leading edge of your craft?

I have always and forever will be a student to the brand. I have always and forever will be a student to my craft and what it is that I do. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that when you choose to close yourself off in what it is you think you know instead of continually seeking knowledge and expanding who you are, you miss out on amazing opportunities and experiences. It is because of this thirst for knowledge that I am who I am today as a musician, performer and influencer.

Do you think that there are any widely-held misconceptions about what you do? If so, what are they and how do you work to dispel them?

People always think it’s easy, but I’ve realized that they generally only see the highlight reels and not all the sacrifices comes along with what it takes to succeed in this industry. All I can do is to continue working hard and staying true to what I believe in. Not everyone will understand, and that’s OK.

How do you map out your goals? How do you measure your success?

Depending on what project I’m working on, I set weekly, monthly and quarterly goals. I give myself bench markers and checkpoints along the way to make sure that my goals and vision are still aligned. As for success, it can be an ever-evolving thing. I don’t believe in complacency, so even when I’ve reached a certain level of “success,” there’s always more to be done.

Name two of your top role models — one from your industry and one from outside of it.

Eric Roberson and Mark Cuban.

Name three books, works, performances or exhibits that changed how you view life and/or yourself!?

50 Laws, Ishmael and The Alchemist.

What affirmations do you repeat to yourself that contribute to your success?

“All it takes is one” one great experience or one great meeting.

What role does technology play in your day-to-day life? How do you utilize it?

Technology plays a very important role in my life. It allows for me to continue to conduct business while I’m on the go and connect with my fans via social media.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?

Vegas! Simply because it’s great.
