Michael Colyar, arguably one of the best comics in the business, is also an author and actor. On Feb. 3 and 4, he will be hitting the stage of the Barnsdall Theater in Los Angeles with his highly anticipated one-man dramatic show, Michael Colyar’s Momma. Rolling out sat down with Colyar at the Roosevelt Hotel during the New Edition fan lunch. We learned one thing right off the bat: “Queen Suga” is one of his favorite shows on television.

Arriving in true Michael Colyar fashion, he was wearing this very flashy personalized Obama baseball jacket. He also started laying his books on the table like he was setting up a concession stand. Admittedly, the titles are very catchy: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House: I Knocked and a Brother Answered, and Miss Innocent Goes to Kool Skool and Other Silly Stuff: A Poetry Book for Adult Children.

So what can we look forward to from your one-man play? Will it be anything like Mike Tyson’s play?

No! Even though I enjoyed Mike’s play; mine will be totally different. IT will be presented in my world-class comedic style. You know I love my Momma, she is an amazing woman. I’m going to be taking you on a journey from my childhood in the Chicago projects to my rise to fame in Hollywood. I’m mainly going to be talking about my struggles and addictions and the huge impact my mother had on my life.

So basically we will be listening to stories about you and your mom? Kind of like you’re reading us a bedtime story?

No, I’m going to definitely have everyone entertained. This show is for everyone. I’ll be talking about my momma but there will be lots of funny moments that will make people think about their own mothers and the extraordinary impact they had on our lives as kids and adults. I hope everyone will come out for an evening of comedy and inspiration … and bring your Momma.

So are your February dates the only two days you will be performing live in Los Angeles?

Oh, I’m taking this play on the road. Michael Colyar’s Momma will tour in 100 cities. I have tour dates and everything lined up.
