Homosexuals, the Black Community and Barack Obama: A Triangulation Cross-fire of Bad Relations
12.23.08
Resentment and outright indignation broils for many Caucasians gays and lesbians towards African Americans, and have been for the past few months. They simmer and seethe with a sense of betrayal and the molten lava of obscene expression has spilled into the arena of public discourse, contaminating relations between the two demographics. They cannot understand how African Americans, wrongly subjected to abject discrimination for centuries, could so blatantly discriminate against them, which they consider the apex of absolute hypocrisy. Many have taken to spitting verbal darts and nails at us, including racial epithets, because they believe, wrongly, that we were the ones who are responsible for defeating Proposition 8 and their right to enjoy same-sex marriage. Now they are ready to erupt because they consider it blasphemous that President-elect Barack Obama, the first-ever elected African American Commander-in Chief, would have the temerity to invited ultra-conservative mega-pastor Rick Warren to preside over the historic Inauguration.
I was driving back to Atlanta from famed Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla., when my coworker and I encountered a massive, boisterous gay rally at the state capitol. Many activist gays are not very happy with right now. They feel it is the politics of convenience and callous constradiction for us to decry discrimination whenever it manifests itself but then to vote, 7 out of 10, against Proposition 8 in California, which repealed the right of same sex marriage. Intoxicated off their rage and bitterness, they fail to realize, or don’t want to realize, that same-sex marriage was doomed to be defeated whether blacks voted or not. As usual, African Americans are a convenient and scarcely-armored scapegoat and major quadrants of the homosexual community pounced on us like a pack of wild jackals ripping away at a carcass. The mainstream community – their fellow Caucasians who are heterosexual who are really culpable for overturning their same-sex rights – present a much too formidable adversary to fight against, so they take to flinging racist comments at us which is no different than their heterosexual white bretheren have always done.
It made it worse because so many gays and lesbians voted for Barack Obama, helping him to become the first African American chief executive officer of the nation. Then we turn around and pull the cultural trap door open underneath them, they allege. They say the choice to appoint Rev. Warren and anoint him with such a colossal platform after all the anti-homosexual rhetoric he propagates in various media channels is an affront to their sensibilities and a direct threat to their desired way of life. But these last several months have snatched away the veil of their victimhood and their so-called allegiance to African American causes. Many of them, wielding influence in the gay and lesbian community, never empathized or sympathized with our causes, but simply co-opted our cause for equality for their selfish gains. They tried to ride our backs to a promised land and, when asked to walk on their own and by our side, they inadvertently exposed the true contents of their hearts, which is pure, unadulterated hate for the black race.
