Black Public Relations Professionals Connect for Meet and Greet in New York
The Black Public Relations Society’s New York Chapter hosted its first 2012 meet and greet. Kisha Barton, president of the local chapter, welcomed old, new and potential members for cocktails, networking and fun at The Caufield saying, “We’re basically re-launching or reinstating the New York chapter. We’re evolving and have some great people who are really excited about bringing this organization back for the long haul and need you guys involved. We are open to suggestions, looking for active people, [and] members to make this organization an asset to each and every one of you.”
“We have a women’s empowerment and a leadership series coming up. We’re in the process of rebuilding and putting committees together,” she continued.
A question was posed by fashion designer Lynette Turner, who recently moved to New York from Los Angeles. She asked about business marketing options, other than social media, for proper media placement and to gain exposure in print publications. Barton was excited by the inquiry because it was an opportunity to share that one of the missions of the organization is to connect entrepreneurs with PR professionals. She offers, “We have a training seminar coming up to address the needs of entrepreneurs, how to pitch your business and how to provide public relations. I strongly suggest you set up a meeting with us so we can connect you with the right person to represent you.”
The Black Public Relations Society was founded in 1989 in Los Angeles. The New York chapter’s roots go back as far as 1991. Its purpose is to ensure that people of color have the needed exposure at their organization or company for advancement. “Our goal is to ensure that our members have opportunities for employment higher education, networking, mentoring and volunteering,” Barton closes.
The next general body meeting is May 8, 2012. –yvette caslin
