The Navy Offers Promising Careers for African Americans

If you’re wondering where the jobs are right now, you should look at the military. The Navy has excellent career options for African American men and women hoping to achieve the dream of a college degree. For example, the Navy has a Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program (BDCP), which pays $2,380 to $4,300 a month for a maximum of three years prior to graduation. It is possible to earn $155,000 through the collegiate program to assist with books, tuition, and housing. Students also have the option of saving the educational payments if they have if they have been awarded a scholarship. Career options range from engineering and business to medicine and aviation along with a number of others.

Think about it, you won’t have the burden of student loan debt that can take several years to a lifetime to pay off after graduation. And you can earn money now while traveling to places you might never have visited otherwise.

My colleagues and I recently toured the USS Ronald Reagan, named after the 40th U.S. President. It is the largest Navy aircraft carrier in the world and it bears the motto “Peace Through Strength.” During our expedition, we witnessed the deployment of several aircrafts including the Hornet and the Prowler from the 4.5-acre flight deck. We were transported on a C-2A Greyhound to and from the U.S. Naval Base in San Diego and the USS Reagan. Our takeoff was catapult-assisted and the aircraft accelerated from 0 to 206 kph (128 mph) in three seconds and decelerated from 169 to 0 kph (105 mph) in two seconds. It was the most amazing experience.

Dispel the myth that black people don’t join the Navy — it isn’t true.–yvette caslin
