The spring months are now upon us in the year of our Lord, two thousand and eleven. As the winter ice begins to thaw, and the budding flowers hint of new life on the horizon, a change beneath the surface is also under way. For platinum recording artists Mary Mary, a similar change has been in place since early 2009. It was at this time  when they first entered the studio to begin work on their sixth album, aptly titled Something Big. The “something big” referenced in the title mirrors that of an undisputed life truth: Change is inevitable.

The change embraced by sisters Erica and Tina Campbell was rooted in a sincere belief that it was time to expand their sphere of influence. For the past decade, the group dominated the gospel music charts in a manner that could only be rivaled by Kirk Franklin.

But saving and re-saving church folks was never good enough for the sisters. They needed to go bigger.

As if right on cue, bigger they went with Something Big. The album, which is set to hit stores March 29, marked a purposeful quest into the unfamiliar territories of mainstream music, where more impact could be made, and, ultimately, more lives saved.

But this journey didn’t come without cost.

With every gospel album sold using melodies and instrumentations often reserved for the club comes a steady stream of criticism from purported gospel music purists. In their eyes, the group had somehow sold out and bastardized the Gospel.

Erica and Tina barely flinched in the face of such talk.

“Whenever you present something to the public, you open yourself up to public scrutiny,” Tina shared. “That’s something that doesn’t bother me because, in my heart, I believe that I am completing God’s assignment. He put us on this earth to touch people in a special way, and I believe that’s what we’re doing. To me, that’s all that matters.”

Erica agreed. “We know that we aren’t going to please everyone with our style. And that’s OK … that’s OK.”
One would expect the murmurs to subside after one platinum and three gold album releases, along with a boatload of awards to boot. One would also expect the pair to place added pressure on themselves to re-create past glories — a point that Erica was quick to shut down.

“We don’t try to chase what we’ve done, and we’re not in competition with anyone else for that matter,” she explained. “We just know that God has given us a gift, so we try to make excellent music every time out.”

Point well taken and certainly justified by the album’s first single, “Walking.” With its sunny, mid-tempo melody and pulse-pounding bass line that drives itself into your subconscious, “Walking” encourages listeners to walk the walk and not just talk the talk of living right. By embracing life, mistakes and all, the impressive single reminds one to take it one step at a time.

Even the sisters deal with this concept on a daily basis.

“I’ll be the first to tell you that I make mistakes,” Tina said with a laugh. “But never have I tried to paint myself as a perfect person. I make mistakes just like the next person when it comes to being a mother … or just a woman in general. But I make sure that I learn from those mistakes and use them to help me be a better person and a better woman.”

The sincerity in her response was unmistakable, as the mother of four seemed intent on sharing her own vulnerabilities as well as those experienced with her sister during their decade-long run together in the music industry. Through those peaks and valleys, the sisters found peace in the increased fellowship with God as well as a heightened awareness of why they’re ultimately here.

“In everything that we do, our intent is to show our love for Jesus,” Erica pointedly explained. “That’s why we’re here, and that’s what you will get in our music.”

It’s a simple understanding of one’s purpose that we should all hope for.

    Omg They are Beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!

good article! It’s soooo sad that people are still trying to knock down what gospel artist are doing to reach the lost and this reallly has to stop! So what if you think the music is too contemporay or “clubish!” If it’s not your style then go continue to listen to James Cleaveland and Shirley Ceaser. If you don’t like the music then it’s not for you since you’re already “SAVED” and been in the way for 400 years!

    • Nanushowme

We know that the one’s who agree with this change r the one’s who aren’t serving God. Like Kirk and many other found u can’t serve two Gods,he gave them that talent and he can take it away how many have u heard at the club gave up their life of clubing and came to God they are’nt listening to the word it’s the beat just like when then r valling women Bs what is wrong with JC and SC I know they didn’t sell out to the devil and I take it that nathieal Lopez wouldn’t know about serving God.

      • Nathanael Lopez Jr

Nanushowme, First, I would like to say that I am a Christian and I do serve, and have a relationship with God as well! I don’t think it’s Christian like for you to say that I don’t serve God just because I agree with Mary Mary’s article. Secondly, who said that Kirk Franklin or Mary Mary or any other contemporary gospel artist are “serving 2 Gods?” Do you live with them to know this or do you speak with them to know this? It’s true that he gave them that talent and they are using it to reach the lost at any cost! They are commisioned to do so by the Word of God…”Go out into ALL THE WORLD and preach the gospel!” There have been many people that have come to know Christ because of Traditional and Contemporary gospel music alike…I’ve seen this happen in lives of my very own family and relatives! I have a brother that came back to the Lord from Listening to Christian Rap music and another that’s being impacted by the message and not just the beat! The thing is that not all music styles are going to appeal to everyone and everyone is ministered at different levels and ways. You don’t know everyone’s heart and mind to know if they’re just listening to the beat, and even if the beat draws them…So will the Word of God! We can’t knock what may “LOOK” foolish to some, because even God used and ass (donkey) in the Bible to speak. Yeah we may think that’s foolish, but God didn’t think it so, and will use what He pleases to speak. There’s nothing wrong with Crossing over…just remember to take the CROSS with you.

        • Basic_brotha

Mary Mary is a gospell duo and them crossing over is like going to the club to bump and grime to some of Shirley Ceasar or Mahalia Jackson songs. I can’t see it happen so I guess I really need some understanding. You said ” there’s nothing wrong with crossing over…just remember to take the cross with you” sounds all good but the cross has to be the cross that Jesus bare not the one that you hope to make you acceptable in one’s eye. I can agree with some of what you said but not once did you mention to practice what you preach. Sure everyone has an opion and everyone is entitle to it but when something is not working and don’t seem to be going your way, why alter your belief and give justification for your changing to make it seem that it is ok. What they are doing is making a living, bottom line. Gospell music is just not paying the bills or catering to the life style that one would want or expect so crossing over is an option. Now their intention may just as well be what they said but look at the saved souls that may follow them. We see it everyday people sell people some BS and expect people to see it as being ok. But everybody that goes into the club are not looking for Jesus. Think about their followers that had left the clubs to worship the Lord do you bring them back into the clubs? This is what you call skating on thin ice. So many gospell singer have lost respect because of crossing over. Then when question they want you to believe it’s about saving souls. It’s about the dollar bill, bottom line. You ask if they know these people have they spoken with these people, let me ask you, have you? Don’t try to justify what they are doing is right cause you like them as an entertainer, When it’s truely about saving souls I can understand their action but when it’s about the dollar bill, well that’s something elce.

          • PHIL

Come on Basic Brotha, don’t be too slow! Crossing over is simply taking the gospel to the world!
Remember the Great commission! Jesus-Christ didn’t come for the Saved or Born-again! Guess you’d
rebuke Jesus for dinning with prostitute and unrighteous if you were in His days on earth!
He came for the lost! What is better, selling negative music or positive, christian music!

  • ShayShay

I love their music….they are a blessing to many!

  • vixenth

like we didn’t see that coming. their husbands are secular producers. you can’t serve to masters. we will see!

    • LTL

Oh, please. Warryn Campbell produces several different genre’s of music, but MOSTLY GOSPEL!!! Teddy Campbell is a musician who plays for several different artists, including GOSPEL!!! Both of these men are saved. Warryn is an ordained minister at their church, and they are both apart of a gospel quartet, The Soul Seekers. Like I a heard someone say, “If you’re a plumber, or lawyer, do you only work for Christian families? Are your professional services just for Christian clients?” Well if not, why would you expect a songwriter/musician to feel any differently? If you’re going to make a statement, make sure you have facts to back it up. Even the fake Christians wouldn’t go through all this for money. Everyone knows Gospel don’t pay as well as Pop artists do. Although their sound has pop influences. They are STILL GOSPEL!

You sound stupid – old school stupid at – that is why the kids these days don’t hve repect for the christian community.

      I agree.

I love this article. For so many years I’ve seen artists struggle to be themselves and reach the people that they were sent to reach, only because of the judgement of “church folk”. The word tells us to make disciples, not to religiously meet with other believers every day of the week and forget the lost. These sisters are doing God’s will. I thank God for them and pray for those who judge. That’s not our job. Let’s just love one another and keep giving God all of the Glory. 7emanon

“In everything that we do, our intent is to show our love for Jesus,” Erica pointedly explained. “That’s why we’re here, and that’s what you will get in our music.”>THIS IS THEIR STATEMENT. AND I HAPPEN TO BELIEVE THEM. BUT I JUST HOPE THEY DON’T GET LOST IN A SECULAR WAY LIKE AND THINK IT’S OKAY. REMEMBER, WE HAD “JACI VELASQUEZ” AND “AMY GRANT” TRIED THE “CROSSOVER BIT, BUT STILL THEY TOUCH PEOPLE’S HEARTS WITH THEIR CHRIST CENTERED MUSIC. IF YOU LISTEN TO GOSPEL RAP’”TADASHII”, “LECRAE” ARE GOPEL RAPPERS WHO USE THEIR TALENTS TO REACH THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE. FOLKS, IT’S NOT MUCH ABOUT THE MESSENGER, BUT THE MESSAGE! I LOVE MARY MARY AND I KNOW IN MY SPIRIT THAT THEIR INTENTIONS ARE IN THE RIGHT……STOP JUDGING……

The word of God tell us to go in to the hedges and highways and compell men to come. If God can use a Jack ass, why can these two sister’s not touch the world, while you sitting in church shouting, and singing and praising God, there are truly some souls in the world that need to know the love of Jesus. Remember the bible says ” HE THAT WIN A SOUL IS WISE”. So why past judgement before you see what the end will be.Do you go and try and save one soul in the world that is hungry for God? so JUST SHUT UP AND STOP BEING SO CRITICAL, WAIT AND SEE, AND IF THEY DO DECIDE TO CHANGE OVER, WHO MADE YOU GOD.

  • My Sharona2010

The ones who are being so critical and judging. Either use the stone or put it down.

  • Dupree63

It’s sad. These two sisters are doing what I call, “straddling the lane”; one foot in the church and one foot out. Wanting your hair and make-up to look nice is one thing, but when I observe the way some of these female gospel singers look in clothes (worldy and very revealing), it’s just sad.

  • Kay Day

I don’t understand what all the fuss is about. I love their music. The world evolving no matter what, and Gospel music has to too if we want to grab the attention of the younger generation. Let’s say I really wanted to dance, would you prefer I play secular songs or their music? And besides, serving God doesn’t have to be in a particular manner. Don’t forget that His ways aren’t ours. Just like He created a billion minds that think differently, there are a billion ways to praise Him, especially when it comes to music. Sometimes we’ve gotta learn to break the stereotype.

  • sdt1196

I’ll probably be blasted for what I’m about to say but I don’t care. The Bible clearly states that if we are loved by the world, then we are of the world and not of Him (John 15:19-20, 1 John 4:5) and It tells us to spread the Word of God to unbelievers but at the same time, we are not to conform to this world (Romans 12:2).
In order for a Gospel singer/group to go mainstream, on a R&B/Hip Hop station, you have to conform in some way, I’m sorry, it is what it is. Most people do not want to hear “Jesus is the way, the truth and the light” (John 14:6) in between songs such as “No Hands by Waka or Bottoms Up by Trey!” Most times when Gospel enters the circuit with secular music its watered down as to “not offend” anyone of another belief or no belief at all.
So while they may seem to sing about Jesus, you will rarely hear His name spoken and the message will come across coded. For example, their song “Walking” does not speak Jesus. There is no way a nonbeliever or someone who is seeking God can find Him in this song. Keep it real! It is watered down, totally secular and an attempt to be accepted by the world, period, point blank. The songs with actual meaning probably won’t be played on a secular station…
Food for thought: Matthew 7:21-23 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘ I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.

WOW…… SO EVERYONE WHO IS ADMIRED BY THE WORLD…I.E. POSITIVE LEADERS, LITERARY PERSONALITIES, ACTORS/ACTRESSES, WEALTHY PEOPLE LIKE STEVE JOBS, even FAMOUS RELIGIOUS PEOPLE….are not of God? IF THE BIBLE REALLY MEANT THAT, I WOULD NOT WHAT TO BE A CHRISTIAN!!! You need to go back and read that again and use a concordance AND AN EXPANDED edition next time. [NOT THE ONE’S that delete “Jesus is Lord”] When the Bible speaks of those loved by the world it speaks of those who don’t believe in the basic foundation of God’s law….i.e. they don’t believe in the exclusive marriage of a MAN and a WOMAN…don’t believe in helping the poor….believe we need to keep GOD out of all institutions and they don’t believe that Jesus is the Son Of God. These are “those who men will speak well of. GOD COULD CARE LESS IF A GOSPEL SONG YOU WROTE IS NOT SPECIFIC ENOUGH AND MENTIONS HIS NAME……there are MANY subjects that appertain to God, Love, positivity and that encourage, exalt and uplifts others.

THOSE OF YOU CLAIMIMG TO BE “SERVERS OF GOD” NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE; DON’T JUST READ IT. YOU PUSH PEOPLE AWAY FROM CHRIST WITH YOUR DUMB STATEMENTS THAT YOU CAN’T EVEN LIFE UP TO YOURSELVES. WOW…… SO EVERYONE WHO IS ADMIRED BY THE WORLD…I.E. These are “those who men will speak well of BECAUSE THE IDEALOGY SEEKS TO MAKE EVERYONE COMFORTABLE IN THEIR SINFUL STATE. If you think Mary, Mary looks “sexy” THAT’S YOUR WEAKNESS…GOD IN NOT JUDGING THEM LIKE THAT BECAUSE THEY ARE HIS CHILDREN….SO HE’S NOT STARING AT THEIR TITS AND BOOTY.

If you can dance to gospel music in the club, then you know that it’s not gospel. These big girls know what they’re doing – making money – by producing and singing R&B (not crossover, when can you cross over God to the clubs? come on!) and calling it gospel. In their private time, they are laughing at all of us, not me though, because all of you Christians are buying their music and all of you non-Christians are buying it, so they get wealthy from both sides. I never have and never will buy their music. Get off the fence, Mary Mary, and decide which it’s going to be, gospel or R&B!
