An 18-year-old Chicago woman was shot in the head and allegedly survived because of her hair heave. According to reports by NBC Chicago, Chantal Hammontree was being dropped off by a friend in the East Chatham neighborhood when a man approached them with a gun.

The male shot Hammontree in the head. The 18-year-old honor student was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment. The girl’s uncle says that doctors believe the girl was saved by her hair weave.

He said the bullet bounced off of her weave. However, doctors have yet to confirm or deny if the weave saved her life.

Hammontree was apparently caught in the middle of a gang war that stemmed from another uncle’s involvement. Her uncle was shot and paralyzed in May and the shooters wanted to attack her because of her relationship with her uncle.

Chicago continues to suffer from senseless violence. Over the July Fourth weekend, 82 people were shot in the city.
