Chicago’s crime rate continues to rise: 41 shootings reported over the weekend

Father’s Day weekend wasn’t very pleasant in Chicago this past weekend. Reports of 41 shootings, leaving at least seven dead is proof that crime in Chicago is not improving and only getting worse.

The first murder of the weekend occurred on Friday in a west Chicago neighborhood. The victim, 21-year-old Ricardo Herrera was shot and killed. His murder was followed by too many others and  have effected people of all ages. The youngest fatal shooting was that of a 15-year -old male. In addition to the teen, a 40-year-old man was killed in a nightclub shooting in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood and a 21-year-old man was shot dead in southwest Chicago. A 19-year-old male was also found lying dead on a sidewalk in Englewood early Sunday morning. Some of the shootings were also done by police in response to one man attempting to flee police and another armed man attempting to shoot at officers in South Lawndale.


Chicago’s CBS affiliate reported a statement from the police department, “We had 8 fewer shooting incidents this weekend compared to the same weekend in 2012,” police spokesman Adam Collins wrote in an email sent out early Monday, “While we’ve had fewer murders to date this year than any year since the mid-1960s, there’s more work to be done and we won’t rest until everyone in Chicago enjoys the same sense of safety.”
