When a comedian gets a tough crowd, he can either crumble or rise to the comedic occasion. Dave Chappelle faced this point at a recent show in Santa Fe, New Mexico, when the comedian was attacked by a racist while onstage. The man identified now as Christian Englander actually threw a banana peel and hit Chappelle.

The obvious racist action, however, did not stop Chappelle from digging into the situation and the attacker with vicious comedic wit. The assault on Chappelle was premeditated because of a perceived insult to one of Englander’s friends. According to Englander, his friend, identified as Johnny Appleseed, was drawing in a comic book during Chapelle’s performance. Chappelle then singled out the individual for a little comedic reminder to pay attention to the show. Englander felt Chappelle’s comments were racist and in retaliation threw the banana peel. Englander was arrested for battery and disorderly conduct.

Chappelle responded as follows:

“Hey, who just threw a banana peel? Hey, would you guys like to see your favorite comedian beat the s–t out of somebody?

First of all, I am not going to let White people ruin bananas for me *^&%&%*& they’re a good source of potassium. And I know my man — I see Corey just jumped off the stage. Corey is one of my Black friends from Harlem. Corey when you find that muthaf—-, do not throw him out, bring him to me. First, I’m going to kill him with my comedy and then I’m going to kick him in his f—ing face.

I can’t believe not only that someone threw a banana on stage; I can’t believe that they had a banana on them, this entire time. And he thought, ‘I’ll just throw the peel at Dave Chappelle.’ He knows I’m going to be mad. ‘Je’ suis Charlie.’ That’s what he said when he threw the banana peel. ‘Je suis Charlie N-word. What a guy can’t draw a cartoon?’ … What a b—h.”
