A racist doctor was convicted of using chemical weapons and drugs to kill Africans. According to reports by SABC News, Dr. Wouter Basson was the project officer at the secretive Project Coast in South Africa during the 1980’s and ’90s.

Basson oversaw the mass production of Mandrax, teargas and cocaine. The chemicals and drugs were used to poison and kill Africans who were vocal against Apartheid. Basson also created suicide cyanide capsules and chemicals that would tranquillize victims for kidnappings. He and Poject Coast poisoned entire villages by infecting water with cholera.

Over 200 people testified against Basson during the trial. However, he claimed that he only acted because he was under strict rule by the South African government at the time.

Basson was convicted of breaches of medical ethics, but he probably won’t face prison time. He could lose his medical license and be fined for his actions.
