Adidas Cancels Jeremy Scott Sneakers With ‘Slave Shackles’: Twitter Reacts
Adidas has nixed plans to release the Jeremy Scott Roundhouse Mids. The sneakers, which were scheduled to be released in August, featured a purple, grey, orange and black colorway.
But the sneakers sparked a controversy for featuring a yellow chain attached to shackles that would fit around the ankles. After an image of the shoes was posted on Adidas’ Facebook page, over 3,000 people reacted and some called the shoes “demeaning” and said that the sneaker’s design was similar to the chains worn by slaves.
Adidas eventually responded by releasing this statement: “The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott’s outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery. The shoes have received both favorable and critical feedback. We apologize if people are offended by the design and we are withdrawing our plans to make them available in the marketplace.”
