Deep Fried Cereal Debuts at County Fair; 5 Other Artery-Clogging Carnival Treats

What do you get when you put sugary dough, heaps of grease and a popular children’s cereal together? An undeniably fatty, artery- clogging concoction that’s debuting at a California carnival this summer. At the San Diego County Fair that kicked off June 8, attendees looking for a sweet fix with little to no concern for their figures can now snack on deep fried cereal.

Writer Shantel Lowe of the Imperial Beach Patch, recently sampled the cereal for all those curious to know what deep fried dough and breakfast sweets taste like when combined. She described it as less than stellar. “These deep-fried Trix aren’t for kids, unless you want to contribute to the obesity problem,” said Lowe. “My fellow test taster, Candace, tried the deep fried Trix and I had the Cinnamon Toast Crunch version. … When I was trying the deep-fried Cinnamon Toast Crunch, the pool of grease in the bottom of the basket made me clutch my heart a little. The doughy ball of greasy cereal wasn’t bad, but it definitely isn’t something I’d go out of my way to buy,” she added. “Candace called the Trix edition ‘disappointing.’ ”

Disappointing or not, San Diego’s cereal treat is just the latest in a series of surprising ways to deep fry your favorite foods. From fried cheeseburgers to fried butter, check out a few more artery-clogging carnival treats you can nab this summer. –danielle canada
