While many people view Labor Day as a time to relax, chill and lament summer’s end, the reason for the holiday is much more important than the time we get to spend on the grill. Five day work weeks, 8-hour work days, worker’s rights and paid vacations didn’t just manifest out of thin air. There was a movement to protect the human rights of those who put their lives and talents on the line for a corporate ‘boss.’


Pullman, Illinois, (a city that is now incorporated into a neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side) was the home of the nation’s first labor strike. At the turn of the century, blood, sweat and tears were an expected part of working. A day off at the factory happened about as often as a loss of limb.
