Karen Cooper is a former member of the Nation of Islam and has a controversial view on the Confederate flag and slavery. Cooper is a member of the Black “Flaggers” movement in Virginia and has stated that slavery was a choice for Blacks. Cooper has allied herself with White supporters of the Confederate flag in stating that “It’s only Southerners and the battle flag that has all the weight and guilt on it,” and “it’s not right — [the flag] represents freedom, it represents a people that stood up to tyranny, and by me being out there I hope you can see this is not racist.”

According to Cooper, she was introduced to her beliefs about the Confederate flag from her friends in the Tea Party movement.
