Porn stars in Los Angeles are more prone to STDs than legal prostitutes who work in Nevada.

According to a report done by six public health experts in California, the study found that 47 out of 168 porn stars had contracted gonorrhea or chlamydia. Since 2004, eight porn stars have tested positive for HIV.

Most production houses in the adult film industry don’t require actors to wear condoms. In contrast, legal prostitutes in Nevada are required to use condom and are tested for STDs weekly. Since the measure took effect in 1988, there haven’t been any reported HIV infections among legal prostitutes and other STD infections rates are negligible.

On Nov. 6,  voters in Los Angeles will vote on a law, Measure B, that will require porn stars to wear condoms while filming. Producers and directors are against the measure because they believe consumers will not purchase porn that includes actors using condoms.

According to the CDC, consistent and correct use of male latex condoms can reduce (though not eliminate) the risk of STD transmission.
