Comedian W. Kamau Bell was in Chicago recently to screen his newest series on CNN titled “United Shades of America.” The premise of the series is that Bell is traveling to places around the United States that Black people would not be expected to go. This leads him on a fascinating journey around the United States that turns out to be  serious, heart-wrenching and humorous.

Bell screened his first episode for an audience at the Dusable Museum of African American History. In the first episode, Bell courageously spends time with the Ku Klux Klan. The concept seems frightening and downright dangerous, however Bell proved to be up for the task and his demeanor allowed the Klansmen to open up in ways that may not have been possible years ago. He witnessed a cross burning and the emotions that emanate from the crew are undeniable.

Munson Steed, publisher of rolling out, moderated a question an answer session after the screening. During the question and answer session the conversation veers to the subject of Donald Trump and Bell had this to say, “Donald Trump is the epitome of White supremacy, this is a dude who inherits money from his family, invests that money doesn’t actually do a good job of investing the money he just leaves it in a bank somewhere, but still ends up a billionaire and then runs for president because he is just bored. You can’t get more white than that. I know Im saying this stuff, but I married to a white woman so I’ve vetted all of this.” The audience erupted with laughter after this statement.

Bell touches on his visit to Portland and points out the element of gentrification and deliberate message sent to Black people that they are not welcome over the course of history. The travel show sends Bell all over the United States and allows him to share his candid experiences with the world.

The “United Shades of America” premieres April 24 10 EST on CNN. Make sure to tune in.
