Thirty years ago, the Republican messiah Ronald Reagan was engineering an ultra-conservative revolution and became a demigod in the process. Julius “Dr. J” Erving finally won his first and only NBA title with the Philadelphia 76ers after three other futile tries in six years. Eddie Murphy’s Trading Places, Chevy Chase’s National Lampoon’s Animal House and Star Wars III: The Return of the Jedi ruled the box office.
Lionel Richie, The Police, Prince and Duran Duran dominated video and radio rotation through the songs “All Night Long,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Every Breath You Take,” and “Hungry Like the Wolf,” respectively. But, of course, it was Michael Jackson who greatly enhanced his legend through the album, song and video for Thriller as well as “Beat It” and “Billie Jean.” The Rubik’s Cube and Cabbage Patch Dolls ruled over pop culture. “The Cosby Show” became a Nielsen blockbuster and Rev. Jesse Jackson announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States.
