What is the mission of the Dallas County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen?

The Affiliate was incorporated in 1992 however we are home to the original Race for the Cure. Our mission is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

What is the qualification for treatment?

We raise funds and invest them in local agencies and organizations that provide direct breast health services. Each of our grantees have different qualifications to be eligible for treatment.

What new grants have you instituted that Dallas residents can benefit from?

We had two new grants that we invested in this past year. The first new grant is with the Irving Healthcare Foundation in partnership with Baylor Medical Center at Irving, Texas Oncology, the Women’s Imaging Center and the Surgical Group of North Texas. [This group] has launched a breast health services program for residents of Irving that provides educational outreach as well as free mammogram’s and breast cancer treatment for low-income women that are uninsured or underinsured. Irving Healthcare Foundation and partners will help increase screening rates for an at-risk population in Dallas County in an effort to find breast cancer early and in its most treatable stages. This program is designed to address the entire breast cancer continuum of care from screening to diagnosis to treatment and to reduce barriers to accessing care including cost, traveling long distances and lack of transportation.

The second new grantee is the Muslim Community Center of Human Services where our investment is specific toward outreach services through community education and collaboration for mammogram screenings. Muslim Community Center for Human Services (MCCHS) programs target a special-needs population of multi-racial and/or multi-ethnic women, many of whom are foreign-born and experience barriers to maintaining wellness. These barriers include limited funds, lack of health insurance, cultural isolation and language differences. A female physician and three multi-lingual educators will provide information and follow up about breast cancer, breast self-awareness and the importance of mammograms in Urdu and Arabic as well as English to increase the potential for immigrants to benefit from MCCHS services.
