Erykah Badu Slams The Flaming Lips For 'Tasteless' Naked Video

Millions across the world have seen The Flaming Lips’ new NSFW video for “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,” which also stars Erykah Badu and her little sister, Nayrok Badu, in some very graphic nude scenes. And while many fans have weighed in on the controversial video, The Flaming Lips and Erykah Badu recently gave their side of the story and Badu is not at all happy with the Lips or the video.

On June 6, Lips frontman Wayne Coyne released a statement revealing that the video released by Pitchfork Media was an unedited and unapproved version of the video and that he apologized for the controversy.

“The video link that was erroneously posted on Pitchfork by the Flaming Lips of the Music Video ‘The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face’, which features Erykah Badu, is unedited and unapproved … Sorry!! We, the Flaming Lips, accept full responsibility for prematurely having Pitchfork post it. It has outraged and upset a segment of fans and we apologize if we offended any viewers!!! This is a Flaming Lips video which features Erykah Badu and her sister Nayrok and is not meant to be considered an Erykah Badu or Nayrok statement, creation, or approved version.”

Coyne also took to his Twitter page to apologize as well. However, Badu responded soon after with a lengthy Twitter post, slamming The Flaming Lips for “violating” her.

“As a human I am disgusted with  what appears to be desperation and poor execution and disregard for others. As a director I am unimpressed.  As a sociologist I understand your type. As your fellow artist I am uninspired. As a woman I feel violated and underestimated,” wrote Badu.

Badu claims that she refused to shoot scenes that were too “disturbing” and invited her sister, who is apparently more liberal, to film those scenes.

Badu also reveals that the Lips were in complete creative control of the recording of the song and the production of the video and that she was misled about what the final product would be and kept out of the loop in the editing process, which she hoped would yield a more artistic, less graphic and meaningful video.

“Oh, and on behalf of all the artists you have manipulated or plan to manipulate, find another way. These things have been said out of necessity. And if you don’t like it you can KiSS MY Glittery A—. O and Nayrok told me to tell u to kiss her a— too. Almost forgot. Peace,” wrote Badu.

You can read the rest of Badu’s note here. It’s quite the read and clearly spells out the end of any relationship between Badu and the Lips.
