Gabrielle Union Teams Up with McDonald’s to Save Kids’ Lives

Detroit- Actress Gabrielle Union recently joined forces with the Ronald McDonald’s House to help save the lives of children world-wide. The star, who has appeared in movies such as Bring it On and Meet Dave alongside Eddie Murphy, visited the McDonald’s in Southfield, Michigan to help sale Give-A-Hands to raise money for the Ronald McDonald’s House charity. Union recently spoke to rolling out and gave the top reasons why she chose to help save the youth. -amir shaw

What made you decide to help the Ronald McDonald’s House charities?
A lot of families don’t have the money to pay for hotels when their kids are forced to go out of town to get care. The Ronald McDonald’s House provides a place where families can live for free or for as little as five dollars a day. This allows families to stay together when kids become sick.

Have you encountered any stories of survival?
There’s a black teenage girl who is a sophomore in high school. She’s been at the Ronald McDonald’s House since February. She just completed chemo and radiation and her family gets to finally go home. At her worst point, her family was able to stay with her and support through her cancer treatments. Now she can go home and do things that normal kids do.

Why is giving back so important to you?
It’s not all about how much money I can give. The thing that is most invaluable is my time. I know in these hard economic times, a lot of people, don’t have money. But you can give your time. If there are kids in your neighborhood or mothers who need support, you should help.

How can others help the cause?
All of the funding for the Ronald McDonald’s House is provided through charity. It’s a great organization to support. You can buy a hand and some proceeds from menu items go to Ronald McDonald’s House charities. We try to encourage being positive in the community. Whatever you give out, you’re going to get back ten fold.

Along with her contributions at the Ronald McDonald’s House, Union has also worked with the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Athletes for Charity. In December, Union will star with Beyonce Knowles, Adrien Brody, and Cedric The Entertainer in the film Cadillac Records.
